When did Russia's persecution of orthodox churches cease?

What I want to know is: when is the exact date you can recall,when Russia stopped its atheistic view and hateful attitude towards the church? I'm just curious as I cannot find many hints on this topic,but I saw a while ago on a site that allegedly it stopped in August 1987...Can anyone verify this?
