Why does my husband's 2001 Ford Mustang make "cricket" noises off and on?

He took it to a mechanic but the mechanic couldn't pinpoint the problem because it was not making those noises when he checked it. Its usually is loud in the morning as soon as my husband starts his car. What could the problem possibly be; any ideas?
