Why does piston decelerate?

There are an unlistable number of explanations of piston decceleration during the power stroke but most can be attributed to friction and load from other internal components. Inertia is often added fromt he power stroke of neighboring pistons of multiple cylinder engines, in single cylinder engines compression is a compensation for the lack of repricating motion.
