Is this normal.............?

For some reason I always wanted to be a hippie and travel with friends.. I dress conservative and am a minority but I always had the itch to do this. I live in upstate new york and we have very cheap rent so Im scared if I leave here I will be put in a bad postion and won't be able to find a place on the west coast when i stop traveling. Plus I don't have any friends who want to do this. It's become a strong desire of mine in the last couple years.
